Sometimes, a dance is just a dance. Survivor 47 episode 10 recaps last week with Gabe’s celebratory dance after winning immunity. Sometimes, fans (like me) will read into “previously on Survivor” and wonder if it will foreshadow future events or provide a red herring. It is very safe to say tonight’s recap is one or the other, without any in-between.
With only nine castaways remaining on the island, it’s clear there are a few individuals labeled as “big threats” in the game. Although, just to point out again, Kyle was available in last week’s episode and did not get sent packing. Does that mean that winning immunity does not hold any significance or is it specifically related to Kyle’s game and his chances of winning?
Survivor 47 Episode 10: Who Are the True Threats?
After last week’s vote-out of Sol, Genevieve seemed to garner a lot of threat-level attention. Although she’s been working the Survivor game all season long, perhaps this last vote opened the others’ eyes to her potential as a winner. Even as she talks with Teeny after leaving her out of the vote, she’s cool, calm, and collected, which is generally indicative of a solid game player.
Teeny, who seems like a very likeable player, had a very emotional confessional discussing her struggles with identity, her place in the world, and how she fits into the game of Survivor. Yes, people deceive other people in this reality TV show. Yes, Genevieve told Teeny that she would have to lie to her at some point to better her game. And maybe that’s not wrong, but perhaps Teeny (like most players) are hoping for a true ally where they can depend on one another without the threat of backstabbing.
Is that always possible? No. But you do need to rely on people in the game to move forward, so Teeny’s desire to find that, or wish Genevieve would have that with her, is not a big ask necessarily. Survivor 47, like all other seasons before it, requires a level of deception; however, the game will also require a level of trust to survive. That’s why it’s important to recognize Kyle and Gabe’s understanding that they might have to target each other.
It doesn’t mean it has to happen, and they still have conversations on working together, but they understand the game. After Kyle wins his fourth immunity challenge, Caroline understands the potential to get Gabe out because of his win potential. She realizes the relationship they’ve built, but also sees the need to get rid of him at some point. Survivor is full of individual ideas on how to make the game work best for them, but it’s also important to understand the other players while adapting to stay in the game.
Survivor 47: One Sneaks Through and One Goes Home
The vote tonight came down between Genevieve and Gabe. Arguments against both players made sense; take out the head of Tuku (Gabe) who has four players left and is very strategic. Or take out the silent assassin (Genevieve) who orchestrated the Sol vote and elevated a bright target on her back. In this case, it seemed like most of the castaways decided to break up Tuku’s four remaining players. Although Kyle was Tuku and voted for Gabe, he saw the importance of getting him before Gabe got him.
As for the other players (minus Sue), they either perceived Gabe as a bigger threat (than Genevieve) or his threat level attached to more alliance members pushed him over the top. Either way, Gabe received all of the votes, except for Sue’s and his own. There won’t be a celebratory dance, but he did say to Jeff before leaving, “I’ll be back.”
What did you think of tonight’s Survivor 47 episode? Did you feel like the lack of attention to Genevieve in tribal council (as a potential red herring) made it seem like it would be a vote for Gabe? I was talking with Meghan (my wife) during tribal and it seemed like the lack of attention there just made it more obvious for Gabe. Maybe this was one episode where we actually thought we knew where the votes were going, but that’s always felt more like a rarity.
What happens next? Who knows.
