Role Play gives viewers good chemistry between Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo and that’s what carries the film. Role Play is exactly what anyone, especially parents, need to watch if they’re looking for a fun movie. It’s this perfect little mash up of rom-com and action-spy movie. You get a chance to look at a normal day in the life of a parent – and how that might change when one is hired for murder.
One of the best aspects of this movie, outside of Emma and Dave’s loving but soon-to-be complicated relationship, is that it’s not overcomplicated. Role Play gives its audience a pretty straightforward path from point A to B without having to connect a million dots along the way. On top of that, it’s a little over an hour and a half, so the flow of the movie never seems stale or overextended.
Is Role Play a Date Night Movie?
Absolutely. This is the kind of movie that will be great to put on while eating some takeout, drinking some bubbly, and watching Cuoco’s character try to navigate the realization that a contract has been put on her head. All while trying to be a good wife and mom, of course.
Oyelowo does a wonderful job providing genuine love for his onscreen partner, while giving sincere confusing rants or comments when he discovers what she does for a living. These moments between the two lead characters makes Role Play so effective and worth watching. Is Emma good at her job and could we see some sort of prequel or follow-up to this movie? Sure, I think it’s possible. I also think the movie is worth standing on its own and being a good movie to come back to when you need something fun to turn on.
Should There Be Another Role Play Movie?
I would like to see Cuoco and Oyelowo team up again. Their chemistry was great and it would be easy to see their relationship explored more, especially as Dave further navigates Emma’s past life as an assassin. She promised she was leaving it all behind, but whether or not that will actually play out is another thing entirely.
It would be quite entertaining to see what that might look like, and the comical instances that could come from it. I imagine Dave saying, “I thought you were done killing people,” to which Emma would say, “Would you rather me have let them kill you?” Again, Role Play is a fun movie. I would watch it again, which means I think a second movie would be equally as entertaining.
If you’re looking to watch Role Play, it is available on Prime Video.
